Where I am on Monday

That's a photo of where I am, but only in my imagination. Yesterday, one of my characters, a 10-year-old boy, climbed to the top of one of those rocks. Today it will magically be twenty years later and he will be 30. He doesn't know it yet, but he's going back up there again soon. And, by the way, thanks. It was only while looking at this photo again, and writing this post, that I realized why he climbed the particular one he did: it's the only formation that inclines gently enough ao that a boy actually can climb it barehanded.
Will you be spending your time in the real world or in an imaginary one today?

Good morning, a few hours ahead of time. Ah, that means coffee is in my future.

Happy Monday to you, even if it is still Sunday where I am.

In some of your early books the description of the main protagonist seemed to resemble yourself, with the exception of your still-living mother and rivalry with the sister. Is it easier to develop the charactors this way or am I projecting too much?

I'm wielding a chain saw this morning for a bit. I better be in this world. However, this afternoon I think I'll slip into murder mode for a while--it might be imaginary; it might be real. Depends on who drops by the house.

Morning Nancy.

I remember you putting this picture up before, and now I'm looking forward to the new book so when I read this part, I'll know exactly where it is and what it looks like.

It sounds like you had a most unslackerly w/e. Slow down and slack some today. :)

Nancy, when I see rock formations lean from left to right against the line of straighter taller rocks, I like to think some boy's been swinging them...

Anonymous, none of Nancy's characters are as smart, as beautiful, or as thin as the author.

Nancy wears red cowboy boots and a lime green terri-cloth mini skirt in real life. Unless, of course, she's settled down since I last saw her.

Rick, do you travel with that chain saw? I have two trees that have expired in the drought. Sadly, one is a white birch.

With a vision of Nancy wearing red cowboy boots & a lime green terri-cloth miniskirts in my head, a simple "Good Morning" just doesn't seem to do it.

Now now, Katiebird, :-)

I'm not sure about the mini skirt. It may have been a hot-pants outfit.

But I defintely remember seeing that blonde roaring about town on the back of a motorcycle.

Good morning. I'm off to the imaginary salt mines in just a bit, but I had to share the chunk of dream I woke up with since I figured it would go over well. I'm not normally much of a Christmas fan, but in the dream I was actually enjoying decorating because Laura had turned up an entire line of Scottish Orangutan ornaments and decoration. Pretty much just what you're picturing: An orangutan in a Santa hat and coat with a kilt and bagpipes.

[makes a mental note to not drop in on Rick today]

Funny that you mention climbing: I was writing last night about some people going over a fence. As I laid down in bed after finishing up (late again, but the wife was reading anyway), I saw how the tunnel was going to collapse, and then there will be some angry packet-sniffing activity. Needless to say, it took me a while to get to sleep… because I have a hard time sleeping with the light on, though. I dropped off fairly quickly once the room got dark.

Coffee is in my present & immediate past. Work is in my immediate future. And speaking of future… I put up another episode of FAR Future this weekend.

Just dropping by Starbucks to see what everyone is up to. Leaving here tomorrow - back home late tomorrow evening. I've missed being in touch with everyone. Sounds like a busy weekend!

I'll be back on Wednesday, and will catch up. Til then, have a wonderful Monday!

Now, Ghostfolk.... :) (PS) I could have sworn I wrote a comment at your blog, but it's not there now. I'll stop by later to bug you directly.

FARfetched, I'm enjoying your FAR Future series (and never miss an episode), but I'm terrible about making comments.

It seems to me that comments on a work of art are too much like graffiti.

Hi, Anonymous, and welcome. I had to ponder a bit in regard to your question, and I think it's a three-part answer:

1. I never set out to make characters who resemble me.

2. But. . .When I started writing novels I seemed to be able to write only in first-person. So my main character probably more closely resembled me than she would have otherwise.

3. To balance that somewhat, I purposely made her *more* than I am in several ways--stronger, braver, smarter, funnier, better looking, younger, blonder, even taller. She wasn't perfect by any means, but she was/is a better version of me. The older I got, however, the less she and I resembled each other. I think. :)

Thanks for asking a question that got me thinking about the creative process.

Rick, lol! You might consider posting a sign at your front door today: "Warning: Author armed with chain saw and a great imagination."

Shoot, famman, I wish I could slow down today! Or, maybe I don't really wish it. I have to get a chunk o' book to my editor tomorrow and I have a short story due.

Please slack on my behalf, okay? :)

Nancy P said...

ghost, lol! Yeah, but you don't have photographic evidence of those red boots, do you?

Nancy P said...

kb, he lies. :) Except about the back of the motorcycle. That much is true. And okay, I did have cowboy boots, but they were brown. And the mini skirt was pink and NOT worn at the same time as the boots. I'm pretty sure.

What a funny dream, Kelly!

And far, I'm eager to read the new installment.

There seems to be a theme of getting inspiration while prone. Family man would approve. He's been trying to tell us that for years.

I had another picture picked out for the Monday Picture Post but this post seemed to cry out for a visit to the Blue Dot archives for this Blue Dot image atop Comb Ridge, a immense set of very steep hogbacks that (once you find an access point) that can be hiked up.

Family Man said...

Great picture Andi, but I'm afraid I couldn't make it up there unless they had an escalator going to it.

KB: It seems to me that comments on a work of art are too much like graffiti. - Heh. Art? In the sense that writing is an art, sure. But let me make it clear: I love getting comments.

Ghost: why is she on the back of the motorcycle? The truly hot babes have their own handlebars! Does she have the mega-do like Rose's alter-ego (see the comic strip Rose is Rose on comics.com if it's not in your local paper)?

Nancy P said...

I love that picture, af. Is it okay with you if I arbitrarily front page any of your photos on any arbitrary day? Have I already checked with you on this?

Nancy P said...

Heh, far. The truly hot babes have a truly hot dude up front. :)

FM, an escaltor is *such* a good idea, lol. Escalator to Heaven.

And Ghostfolk has one of my fav stories up--of the ghost *he* saw. The Ghost and the Gun.

All of those links are on my blogroll.

Beautiful picture!

Morning, everyone, and thanks for the laughs. Everyone is witty and wonderful as usual.

I am working like a fiend again today. Yesterday I had to have a cupcake with vanilla buttercream frosting at 11 pm to reward myself for all my hard work against the dastardly passive voice that had to be slain.

Safe travels to everyone whether the journeys are real or imagined.

Nancy P said...

If you see the Passive Voice on the road, kill him.

For me.

Cupcake with buttercream icing!!!!! I want one!
You are a wicked woman of impeccable taste.

AndiF said...

Nancy, of course you can post any picture you want any time your want. In fact, you are welcome to go cruise my photobucket albums whenever you are in need of picture fodder.

Thanks for your answer. While people that know me would say that I am "quite a talker". I find that when I write I actually express more of the "real me", especially when the words are uttered through a fictional character. Is this a common experience of the writers on this blog?

Nancy P said...

That's a great question, Anon. I don't know for sure, in my case, though I do think some of my characters say out loud things I might think but would never actually say.

Are you ever surprised by what you find out you really think? :)

Family Man said...

Everyone has been very busy over here today. Well don't worry because I slacked for everyone today.

BTW Kimberly I've been thinking of cupcakes with buttercream icing all day. Me thinks I might have to go to the store tomorrow.

Nancy P said...

And don't think we don't appreciate your talent, FM!

If one more person says cupcake, I may have to commit one, too.

A bit of both actually.
