Nice doggie

The Westminster Dog Show just ended, so I thought I'd ask about your favorite dogs or dog stories. I've had three dogs in my lifetime--Sasha, an American Eskimo, who was my true love, and Duckie and Lucy, who were mini dachshunds. Lucy and Sasha were great hunters-- of the already-deceased. Sasha once brought me the head of Garcia. . .no, no, I mean the hind leg of a long-dead deer. Lucy came in one day and set the back half of a squirrel down beside me on the sofa. I didn't know she had done it, until I happened to look to my side and down. OHMYGOD! I felt like Marlon Brando in the Godfather. As for Lucy, the little darling never caught anything living or dead, but there was one chipmunk that she chased repeatedly into the house. Each time, the chipmunk ran behind the television set. Each time, my son and I would build a tunnel of couch cushions and chase the little critter down the tunnel and out the front door. And then the next day, we'd play that game again.

Photo: My son's great aunt on his father's side won Westminster three times with English Springer Spaniels. The spaniel above was one of them. (I met the aunt, who is not the woman in the photo, but not the dogs.)

Wow, insomnia can have a silver lining...I'm the first one here today. ::g::

Alas, no dog stories for me, as I'm dogless. That said, my ideal dog would be an Irish wolfhound...probably several of them. So not going to happen while I live in a small shoebox apartment in the DC area. ::g::

Perhaps one day...

Morning, gang!!

Hi! I'm drinking coffee and thinking about dogs.

Good Morning Maria!

Beth, where the heck are you?!? How are we going to keep our kinky lifestyle going if you don't beat me up?

Hi Maria. Hi still -- I hope -- sleeping folk.

Well the Pack is none to happy right now because they have to stay outside all day. No couch! No dog bed! Oh noes, no woodstove!!!

So they'll be really delighted for me to get home tomorrow so they can get back to their rightful places in life.

Hi Sniff.

Hi Giddy.

Hi Hopeful (whose hurrying days are long over).

Bobby was a half Husky/half German Shepard with nine toes on each back foot. He could pull semis out of ditches and refused to come inside the house even at twenty below. He learned how to unlock the gate to escape, and when the fence was raised to seven feet, still managed to bounce off the side of the house to grasp the top and swing his butt over the fence to visit the ladies.

He would gladly jog five miles with me through the Colorado countryside and happily play the dive for the rock game in each farmers pond we passed. When I moved back east, and he couldn't come, he spent the remainder of his years joyfully on a farm thinking he was a small horse who ordered cows to stand in line.

Haven't had a dog since him.

katiebird, did you once tell me that your mom didn't 'low no dogs 'round there? Or did I make that up?

Andi, awww. That one of Hopeful is particularly sweet.

Rick, what a dog! I believe every word you said, including the eighteen toes and the eighteen-wheelers.

I forgot to say Happy Valentine's Day. Truffles for everybody.

Morning and Happy VD, everyone! Sorry andi, I woke up at 5 and then somehow fell asleep again - and then forgot to comment! See what happens when I don't get my daily beating? :-)

I had a malamute, so understand the breed, Rick. He was happiest under a foot of snow, not like andi's woodstove lovers. Never have been able to keep a dog - lose them to illness, divorce, moving... Hopefully I get to keep the next ones forever! (in doggie years, anyway)

I think I've talked some about Dogs I Have Known here before. There was Spook, a big ol' lab mix my mom got one year while i was in college. He about took a chunk out of me the day I came home, but the hostility lasted all of two seconds before he realized I was family. He could jump right over the chain-link fence in the back yard — he did it by accident one evening when we went for a walk & left him behind, but it was an accident only once. He was also the one I had tow me around on my bicycle.

Danny was a springer mix (mixed with something BIG - he weighed 50 lbs and wasn't fat at all). Mrs. Fetched's older sister hooked us up through someone who was going to send him to the pound (he was a puppy when we got him). I knew he'd be OK when we were driving him home; he started crying because he needed to pee & wouldn't do it in the car. He knew who and what was welcome here and what wasn't, something we've not been able to find in other dogs since.

And I've talked about Buster T. Butthead in the last week. :-P

Hey Beth, Giddy, who is a malamutt, says to tell you nothing makes sleeping in snow more enjoyable than first sleeping next to a woodstove until you are panting from the heat -- it's just her version of from-sauna-to-ice-cold-swim.

Happy VD? Yikes, lol!

Beth, I love malamutes. Well, actually I love all "Northern" dogs. I once stayed at a little Colorado inn that was full of mushers for a dog race, so the entire back yard was full of mals and huskies, etc. Any passerby nearly got licked and tail-wagged to death. :)

Far, I maintain that Buster T. Butthead is secretly brilliant. Okay, maybe it's a pretty well-kept secret, but still. . .:)

The Feline Collective has asked that I not actually use the D word. Though I lived in a D** owning house as a kid my entire adult life has been spent as staff for a variable herd of kitties.

I worked at Krabloonik, a dogsled operation in the Snowmass Valley for a summer, between ski bum jobs. And fell in love with all 100 Huskies and Malamutes, but especially a 150# Malamute named Kel. So of course I had to have one of my own, named Keltoo. Unfortunately he loved to jump the fence and wander down the middle of the road 5-6 miles to visit neighboring dogs, dodging log trucks the entire way. I finally gave him to a woman who trained and bred them, and he lived his days on a 17 acre farm.

He never figured out the "get warm first" part, though, andi - giddy has one over him!

And Buster IS a sweetie!!

(waving to Kelly and his felines, hiding in the corner)

Nancy P said...

Meow to Kelly who values his life. We won't tell them you hang out with people who like cats AND dogs.

Beth, you have had some cool jobs!

Anonymous said...

I have, Nancy! And some really boring ones, too. Almost 20 years of office work, mainly temping - social worker working with pregnant teens - cashier in Snowmass, CO on the mountain - river ranger, checking for valid fishing permits on NY's Salmon River - selling whitewater rafting trips - writing service manuals and running the Creative Department and being the prez's personal assistant at a $40million mfg company where I threw parties for 1000 people - running the Booster Club at North Idaho College...the list goes on and on and...

I don't list jobs on my resume any more! Potential employers aren't sure if I'm versatile or flaky...

Kelly McCullough said...

Now I've done it. I just got this nasty mailing from Chairman MaCavity of the House Committee on Un-Feline Activities.

It begins: Are you now, or have you ever been a member of the Dog-People's Party?

Anonymous said...

We'll vouch for you, Kelly! Just renounce all knowledge of any and all dog-related activities, and swear that your parents forced you to feed the dog under threat of no ice cream ever again. Undue duress, and all that.

Your biggest problem might be convincing your resident felines of your innocence, though, as they watch you giggle over these purely canine entries...

Nancy P said...

Beth, lol, that could be the headline on your resume:

Versatile, or Flaky?
YOU DECIDE!

Nancy P said...

Ack, Kelly! Just don't turn in your friends to the committee, okay?

Dog stories, love 'em, ditto pics of doggies.

Mine is a basenji, a dog that believes she's a cat. Towards that end, she scratches furniture and hardly ever obeys, unless there's food on offer.

Kelly McCullough said...

Nancy, don't you mean "fellow travelers?" ;-) Nothing to fear I'll live with being on the kitty blacklist if I have to. It should last just until the food bowls empty.

Nancy P said...

Yes! That's exactly the phrase I was trying to think of Kelly. :)
