Icy city, warm-hearted people

Welcome to Lexington, Ky., where the ice is not melting. It's spectacularly beautiful, though I know from experience with ice storms at home that it seems considerably less pretty if your power's out. I'm one of the lucky ones staying in a nice hotel with the luxury of electricity. After five hours of delayed flights yesterday, I was rewarded with the BEST shrimp and grits from room service. Also, wine.
No complaints from this traveler.

Shrimp and grits? And that's to welcome you? You're certainly not in Kansas anymore, girlfriend!

Not my photo. I didn't bring my camera, 'cause I knew I wasn't going to be taking any walks.

lol, Paul. Fortunately, grits are one of my favorite foods, and nobody makes 'em like a true suthener.

Glad you made it okay, Nancy. And got well-rewarded.

And repeating from the last post ... morning all.

Shrimp & grits is a southern coastal thing, and a mighty fine one at that.

Gorgeous picture! Although I am cursing at the ice storm remnants like the offspring of a drunken trucker and a sailor on leave, because I have been trapped in an ice cave all week.

Glad to hear you're safe Nancy. I've never eaten grits ... sounds yummy.

Delurking to say hi to all and what an incredible picture. Glad you are comfortable, Nancy.

Nancy, glad to hear you have power and… shrimp and grits? OK, Jen says it's cool, but I still think it's a little weird. I've never been able to get into eating grits. Trivia: one place you can find grits and other southern fare up north is Detroit; a lot of people moved up from the Deep South to work in the heyday of the auto industry and they brought their cooking with them.

We get ice storms here on occasion as well; I keep a tin of smoked oysters on hand for the occasion.

Stay warm, y'all. We're supposed to get a spike of cold weather next week, but it doesn't look like it will stay around long enough to be Winter #4.

Shrimp and grits sounds lovely. Hope you have a nice stay. Gonna go loll by the pool soon and try to get some words here in Napa.

::waves hello at Nancy::

Glad you are in a lovely place with power and yummy shrimp 'n' grits. One of my fav restaurants here does a mean one of those.

It's Friday (so much yay) and my brand new 24" iMac just arrived. Sadly, I must finish the work day before taking this puppy home and setting it up.

Happy Friday, all!

Yay for new iMac, Maria! I've gotten too attached to laptops to consider anything but a MacBook myself, these days.

I've managed to get a few hundred words written each of the last two days' lunch hours… I'd love to be writing by a pool like Kelly, but I'd probably get, um, distracted. Unfortunately, what's going to distract me this weekend is work following me home. At least Daughter Dearest will be there to provide an occasional silly-break.

Far - I use a MacBook Air for all my writing and most of my non-mime work. The iMac is my media indulgence.

Since I tend to watch TV via iTunes downloads and/or DVDs, I prefer the media capabilities of the iMac.

Still wanting to leave work and go home to play computer...

Crawling off the couch to say "hebbo!"

Kids brought home "the crud" from school or some sports activity. I've only been on to make my hockey picks and check out IVG's new pup.

Still have a job. Still have bills. :) Still have this freakin cold and body aches. It's really messing with my "perkiness" :D

That picture is beautiful and scary. Having no electricity in winter is totally not fun. Thankfully, no ice here this time.

Thanks for helping get the pups' names correct, Andif. They are all so handsome. Hope you feel better soon, Janet.

Happy Friday!

I love ice storms. The twinkling and glitter of the ice in the trees.
Kentucky went a bit overboard I'd say.
We are a foodie bunch.
Grits--My aunt makes the best cheese grits on the planet.
With shrimp--sounds yum.

I want to be by the pool in Napa with Kelly. Let there be diversions I say, Farf. Cute hunky guy, bring me another class of wine please.

New Mac--Lucky Maria. New toys are fun. Hope you have time to play over the weekend.

Waves to Jen and Olivia, Dina, and Janet.

Bono good no ice but stay warm with all that snow.

I feel like I'm stepping on boran's toes, adding a comment after his. :-)

Long day - truck is packed and already in Montana, filled with everything I own. I fly back to FL tomorrow. There was a TON of snow on the ground but sunny days here, which was a nice treat. Almost made me want to stay...

My landlord let me out of my lease!!! So Monday I'll be trying to decide if I should live in St Augustine or New Smyrna Beach, and looking for a place to live. Thanks for all of the good vibes - they helped!

Gorgeous picture, but the reality of the situation isn't nearly as pretty. I remember the first time I saw trees coated in ice, and was awed at the beauty.

Yay Kelly for being warm! And boo that you're sick, Janet. I'll be in FL by midnight tomorrow, and warm again on Sunday.

Hi and goodnight to everyone - be safe, and I'll check in from Denver tomorrow in between flights. Oh, and grits - yummy!!

Good news, Beth on being all packed, ready to go, and out of your lease.

So looks like Nancy was out partying all night and couldn't get a new post up last night. You go, wild woman. :)

Morning all.

Kelly McCullough said...

Congrats, Beth, that's wonderful news.

Morning all.

Hope Nancy's charmed power hasn't run out on her.
Probably at whatever event she went there for.

I just finished editing another chapter. BIG YIPPEEE.

I'm thinking one left, but I may break it into two. Still ON SCHEDULE. Yeah.

Sensational Saturday to All.

Maria Lima said...

Lisa - that's great news on the writing front.

I've just broken the halfway mark on the book. My goal is to finish it by the end of February, leaving March as tweaking month. (It's due in April).

Kelly McCullough said...

Maria, that sounds very familiar, at least the half-way mark and the end of February, though I'm not sue until June 1.

Lisa, congrats on staying on schedule.

Conda Douglas said...

Beautiful, cold, glad the heat's blasting away!

Nancy P said...

I remember writing that, Lisa. I distinctly remember wanting to portray very precise details, because it was going to be one of those moments in life that she would forever after remember as "Before" and After." I'm also pretty sure I remember writing about the spilled AA batteries, and I"m also pretty sure I know where that came from, which is probably that I had recently dropped a remote control, and the batteries had spilled out. "Ah ha," I probably thought, "I can use that."

(Thank you!)
